We have prepared the structural design of a three-storey, 20 m high and 12 x 18 m high technological scaffold. The rack 1 is a large building containing equipment storage and handling areas. The lower part of the structure is made of reinforced concrete up to a height of 8 m up to the first floor, while the upper part is of steel structure, longitudinally and transversely braced and supported at the bottom by hinged columns. The requirements set by the fire protection designer required the structure to meet a hydrocarbon fire curve of R180 minutes, which posed a significant design challenge. An additional difficulty was that several pieces of equipment, weighing almost 70 tonnes, had to be placed on the process rack, and the pipe supports for around 200 pieces of mechanical piping had to be specified as point loads each.
